I am delighted to welcome new Committee members to support the work of the RMG SIG after a successful recruitment campaign. The new membership is as follows:
The Committee have already met to agree a workshop proposal and a pop-up event for ASM. We are in the process of developing a programme of other exciting events including Journal Club discussions and Bite-size seminars based on the expertise of the group.

Biographies of RMG SIG
Chair Anne-Marie Reid
Anne-Marie Reid is currently Professor of Medical Education and is Chair of the Researching Professional Learning Group in Leeds Institute of Medical Education (LIME). She was previously Dean of Teaching and Learning at St George’s, University of London, with responsibility for academic leadership and scholarship in medical education. She has been appointed as an Education Associate with the GMC.
She has a Professional Doctorate in Education, is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and is a Chair of the ASME Researching Methodologies Special Interest Group. She has extensive experience of curriculum development in the UK and internationally and provides academic consultancy in this area.
Her research interests lie in professional and workplace learning with specific reference to Activity Theory. She has adopted the Activity Theory framework in published studies of workplace learning and transitions in medical education and has run national and international workshops focused on this topic. She is a committed research supervisor and currently supports undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral research in Health Professions Education.
Deputy Chair Anne McKee
Anne is an expert educationalist and social science researcher who specialises in medical education and medical education research. As an established leader in her field, she is Postgraduate Research Lead for the Centre for Education and a valued member of the Centre’s Executive Committee. Her research examines changes in medical and higher education and their implications for curriculum development, teaching and learning in clinical contexts. A key line of inquiry in her research is studying the inter-relationships between policy, research, and practice. Anne’s research seeks to address complex and challenging issues in medical education as can be seen in her current research focus, which is examining issues of diversity, equity and inclusion in medical education to support medical educators address the needs of diverse learners, recruited to better reflect the patient populations they will serve. She is committed to deploying medical education and medical education research to better support experiential learning and improve healthcare.
Anne’s publications reach both academic and practitioner audiences, through journal articles, A Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) Occasional Paper and an edited book: ’Learning Trajectories, Innovation and Identity for Professional Development.
Anne’s excellent research and professional reputation has brought her international leadership roles in:
- The American Educational Research Association (AERA) where she leads the Professional Development Community within Division I ‘Education in the Professions’.
- The Society for Directors of Research in Medical Education (SDRME), where she is a member and leads a Special Interest Group examining the impacts of Covid19 on medical education, including reviewing the methodologies of published studies and their sensitivity or lack of in relation to issues of DEI. Anne in active and contributing member of the Special Interest Group in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI).
Secretary Anél Wiese
Dr Anél Wiese is a Lecturer in Medical Education at the University College Cork (UCC), Ireland. Before moving into academic medicine full-time, she graduated with a Bachelor’s Honours Degree in Physiotherapy from Stellenbosch University, South Africa, in 2006 and worked in this profession until 2015 in both South Africa and Ireland. She completed a Master’s in Clinical Education at the National University of Ireland, Galway (2015) and a PhD in Medical Education at UCC in 2018. Her role at the university includes facilitating the MSc in Health Professions Education and coordinating a programme for developing teaching skills in medical students. In 2021, she received a UCC Teaching and Learning Award supporting the ongoing innovation in medical education training in undergraduate medical programmes. She is the Chair of the School of Medicine Social Research Ethics Committee. She is also an Editorial Intern at the journal Medical Education. Anél has published in several medical education peer-reviewed journals, supervises MSc students and undergraduate research students, and has successfully secured research funding from national funding bodies. She conducts research programmes in workplace learning, clinical supervision, transition to practice, and maintenance of professional competence through a range of qualitative, mixed-methods, and evidence synthesis methodologies.
Events co-ordinator Morven Shearer
Morven is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Medicine at the University of St Andrews, and Director of the Graduate School for Interdisciplinary Studies. A life scientist originally, she became interested in wider issues of bioethics and science policy and subsequently moved into the area of medical ethics and law. Her areas of interest are trust and fairness, with a policy and practice focus. She has chaired the research ethics committee (REC) in Medicine for 8 years, and served as deputy convenor for the University REC. In the education-sphere, her research interests centre around interdisciplinarity, the teaching and assessing of ethics and the ethical review of pedagogic research and scholarship. A former Director of Teaching in the School of Biology and Associate Dean in the Faculty of Science, she values collaboration and led a cross-institutional faculty learning community to explore reflective academic practice.
Research methods in a post-pandemic world: from quick fixes to lasting change
The unexpected move to remote working in March 2020 necessitated rapid changes to research methodologies to accommodate the new ways of working, and allow research to continue. Researchers adapted traditional methodologies and adopted new practices to engage with participants as best they could. Some of those changes presented challenges and did not quite replicate the tried and tested ways of working, but others proved positive and allowed for greater participation, inclusivity and flexibility while also providing new insights. This workshop will explore some of the remote methodologies adopted by the education sector during the pandemic and, working with workshop participants, the challenges and benefits of these methods, alongside possible refinements, will be discussed and best practice shared.
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Tudor Chinnah
Dr Tudor Chinnah is a Senior Lecturer in Anatomy and Medical Education at the University of Exeter Medical School and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Tudor wished for an opportunity to contribute to the activities of ASME and also further develop his experience and interest in medical education research. Tudor’s interest in Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Group stems from a lived experience in the UK, as a former postgraduate student and now staff. He has maintained a sustained engagement and contributed to some of the University of Exeter’s activities regarding racial equality, diversity, and inclusion. Tudor is a member of various Racial Equality, Diversity and Inclusion focus groups including Widening Participation (WP) Task and Finish Group of the University of Exeter. Tudor is delighted to be appointed as the ASME RMG-SIG EDI lead and looks forward to contributing to furthering the aims of RMG and ASME in general.
Membership and Networks Stefano Sandrone
I am Stefano, an Italian neuroscientist, educationalist and a Senior Teaching Fellow working at Imperial College London.
I was awarded the Julia Higgins Award and the President’s Award from Imperial College London, the Biennial Award for Outstanding Book in the History of the Neurosciences from the International Society for the History of the Neurosciences, the Science Educator Award presented by the Society for Neuroscience, and the H. Richard Tyler Award, the Lawrence C. McHenry Award and the A. B. Baker Teacher Recognition Award from the American Academy of Neurology.
In 2015 I co-authored Brain Renaissance: from Vesalius to modern neuroscience (with Marco Catani, published by Oxford University Press) and in 2021 I wrote Nobel Life: conversations with 24 Nobel Laureates on their Life stories, advice for future generations and what remains to be discovered (published by Cambridge University Press, edited by the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings).
Communication and Social Networks Megan Brown
Megan is a creative medical education teacher and researcher with a passion for innovative pedagogy, qualitative research, philosophy, and educational theory. Megan has a background in clinical medicine but has transitioned full-time to academia. She was recently appointed Programme Director for the University of Buckingham’s Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education, is a senior lecturer in medical education at the University of Buckingham and works as a Teaching Fellow in Medical Education Research at Imperial College, London. Megan is due to defend her PhD in Medical Education in late February 2022. Megan has eleven years’ experience in social media management and is co-chair for the NIHR Incubator for Clinical Education Research’s dissemination workstream.
